Caring for Your Retainer After Invisalign®

Finishing your Invisalign® or braces treatment is a big milestone, but your smile isn't finished changing just yet. Teeth naturally want to drift back toward their original position, and your retainer is what keeps that from happening. Following these guidelines will help you protect your results for years to come.

Right after treatment, your teeth are the least stable they'll ever be. For the first 3 months, wear your retainer full-time, day and night, removing it only to eat, drink anything other than water, and brush and floss your teeth.

After the 3-month mark, most patients can transition to nighttime-only wear. From that point on, wearing your retainer every single night is what keeps your smile exactly where you and your dentist worked hard to put it.

Watch for Warning Signs of Shifting

A retainer that used to slide on easily but suddenly feels tight is a signal worth paying attention to. It can mean:
  • You missed a few nights of wear
  • Your retainer has worn down or stretched with use
  • Your teeth have already begun to shift

How to Clean Your Retainer

Keeping your retainer clean protects both your smile and your oral health. Bacteria and plaque can build up on retainers just like they do on teeth.
  • Rinse your retainer with lukewarm (never hot) water every time you remove it
  • Brush it gently with a soft toothbrush. Skip the toothpaste, which can be abrasive
  • Soak it periodically in a retainer or denture cleaning solution
  • Never boil your retainer or run it through the dishwasher
  • Store it in its case whenever it's not in your mouth to avoid loss or damage

When to Replace Your Retainer

Retainers don't last forever. Cracks, cloudiness, a loose fit, or visible wear are all signs it's time for a replacement. We also recommend keeping a backup set on hand. If you lose or break your only retainer and go even a short time without wearing one, your teeth can begin to shift before a replacement is ready.
